UNM Popejoy Lobby Renovation—Albuquerque, New Mexico

As New Mexico’s flagship performing arts venue, Popejoy Hall has welcomed audiences since 1966 and stands as a cultural cornerstone of the University of New Mexico campus. To preserve its legacy while adapting to the needs of modern audiences, UNM and Popejoy Hall Business Operations launched a 10-Year Master Plan focused on revitalization. Hartman + Majewski Design Group was selected to lead the planning, design, and cost analysis efforts to guide phased renovations and strategic improvements.

Supported by University and State funding sources, Phase 1A the Lobby Renovation was prioritized and completed in the Fall of 2024 in collaboration with Franken Construction. The renovation encompassed all three lobby levels and was executed within a highly compressed three-month construction window between Broadway seasons. This required seamless coordination between design and construction teams to deliver the project on time and within budget.

The renovation redefined the audience experience and elevated the Hall’s identity through:
• A reimagined lobby experience on all three levels
• Enhanced wayfinding
• Consistent finishes on all levels to create a cohesive feel

The Popejoy Hall Lobby Renovation exemplifies how thoughtful design and precise execution can breathe new life into a cherished cultural venue—ensuring it continues to inspire and serve future generations.
