Crystal Boarding School Historic Structure Report

This Historic Structure Report (HSR) was completed pursuant to Section 106. It was commissioned by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Navajo Nation Heritage & Historic Preservation Department (NNHHPD) to compensate for the adverse effects incurred by the demolition of some buildings on campus. Building 302, referred to as the Double Hogan Building, was the subject of the HSR. It was constructed in 1935 as part of a New Deal-era program to create new schools within the Navajo Nation.

This document described the Developmental History of the Double Hogan Building and listed Treatment and Work Recommendations for this historic structure. The Developmental History detailed the site’s history and the context of the Double Hogan’s construction. The report then described the building’s development and use over the past 90 years. A physical description of the structure followed and the building’s significance was evaluated. A complete assessment of the building’s condition was also included. Finally, the report included Treatment and Work Recommendations. In this section, the recommended Historic Preservation Objectives were listed and requirements for the recommended work were outlined.

The HSR included a Matterport scan of this historic building. A Revit model was made from the scan and hybrid imagery was created showing the materials and textures of the structure along with the dimensions of each opening and wing of the building.
